Wood Flooring Species

Choosing a Species

More than 22 domestic and imported wood species are used for wood flooring. The most common of these are Red Oak, White Oak, Maple, Ash and Pine. Some other domestic species are Beech, Birch, Black/American Cherry, Douglas Fir, Mesquite and Walnut. If you are looking for something more exotic, consider these imported woods: Brazillian Cherry, Australian Cypress, Jarrah, Mahogany, Merbau, Padauk, Purpleheart, Teak, or Wenge.

Arranged according to Relative Hardness

Relative Hardness is determined by the Janka Hardness Rating System.
The Janka Hardness Test measures the amount of force it takes to sink
a .444 inch steel ball half of its diameter into a floorboard.
